BLOG 3: Twilight

For this blogpost I chose to analyze the movie trailer for the 2008 release of Twilight, the vampire love story (this being the first movie released out of the five). The movie was based on the the first book in the Twilight series written by Stephenie Meyer. The movie trailer for the movie gave viewer’s a glimpse of what to expect from the actual film.

The song itself sets the tone for what is to come, the song is mysterious and dark, it is then followed by an image of Bella the main character in her high school parking lot. Suddenly transitions to a dark screen with the words “Nothing Will Be The Same” for a few seconds. This transition adds a dramatic effect, and alerts the audience that something serious is about to happen. Shortly after the director switches the camera focus onto Edward. During this scene Edward is shot from extreme long shot angle and then the camera switches to a medium close up shot of him. The way the camera is angled in the extreme long shot shows that Edward is looking straight at Bella from a distance, due to the back of Bella’s head is in the corner of the long shot. The lighting in this scene can be described as a bright heavenly glow with a combination of ambient lighting.

Right before the car crash scene in which Bella almost looses her life, which Edward saves, the loud screeching noise used to alert the audience of the following scene: The Car Crash. The screeching sound can be identified as a special effect used, which we discussed in class. The special effects used throughout the trailer are all very dramatic and creative.

Lastly,  the scene that caught my attention near the end of the trailer was when Edward was being attacked by another vampire as he was slammed against glass. There is a sharp sound of shattering glass used in this scene. Listening to soundtrack of the trailer without  watching the images helped me identify the sounds being used which led me to questioning some of the sounds for both their presence and meaning. Some of the sounds that became easy to identify were: the shattering glass, screeching tires, emergency vehicle sirens, wind howling, as well as the sound of a struggle occurring(fight).

I believe that sometime is difficult to determine whether a cut is needed between certain scenes in the trailer, after watching the trailer numerous times there were transitions where the scene would fade to completely black to move on to the next scene. I believe the cuts made from scene to scene are used properly in this movie trailer which outline the story's theme much more cohesively by using scenes that make sense together, providing a flow of information.
